American Florists
In the 1950's our family, florists for generations, opened their first shop in
San Bernardino, CA. Near Mill Street and Waterman Ave."Alkana's AAA Florist."
Later they moved to Highland Ave. and Waterman, where it is currently located today.
After High School, John Mays, worked full time at the shop located there, until November 1974. Delivery, marketing, display, sales and operation were some of the daily work requirements.
In November 1974, we opened,”My Florist,” located in San Bernardino at North Waterman Ave. Until March of 1984, “My Florist,” provided full florist services, Weddings, daily deliveries to homes, business, hospitals and sympathy flowers. We were members of several wire services, FTD, Florafax, and many others, popular at the time.
Ah the fond memories of years gone by, what a world.
From September 1984 to June 1993 Floristry Instructor, commercial florist classes, Colton - Redlands - Yucaipa Regional Occupational Program. Our classes consisted of thirty plus students per school, we designed, constructed and delivered weddings for the public. Often as many as three or more per weekend in the busy season. Students were taught job seeking skills, as well as learning to own and operate a florist business.

October 1993 to June 2000, “ American Florists,” located in Redlands and Highland CA. The shop was originally intended to serve brides and their wedding flowers, but demand created a full service florist and a full time job. We served as many as twenty brides per month during the busy times in addition to the other shop sales.

In the summer of 1993, John taught classes in floral design at the Ateneo De Davao University in the Philippines, Davao City, Mindanao.
In addition to some private classes in Wedding flower design, the Philippine Islands provided the opportunity to design wedding flowers for a number of events when we were there, for friends and family.
